The Gustav Eirich Awards
The Gustav Eirich Award recognises and promotes global industrial innovation

The 54th International Colloquium on Refractories in Aachen played host to the prestigious Gustav Eirich Awards – an initiative by the ECRef European Centre for Refractories to promote ideas and support young talent in technical disciplines. The 2011 awards marked the third time the international accolade was presented, and three winners received prizes to the value of 3 000, 2 000 and 1 000 Euros for outstanding scientific work on refractories.
The first prize went to Jinichiro Nakano, Ph. D. from the USA, for his improvements to refractory components. Volker Stein (Germany) took second prize, and Rafael Guimarães de Sá, Ph. D. (Brazil) the third prize.
The higher number of international entries received reflects the award’s increased global recognition. Last year’s awards also highlighted a particular trend centred on practical aspects and innovation.
Submissions are evaluated on environmental aspects including life-cycle considerations, a discussion on energy and other resources, the design and practical modelling for practical applications, and other processing aspects.
Refractory-based topics for this year’s award include raw materials, components, application technologies, creativity, and innovation.
Entries for the 2012 awards close on May 31st and the competition is open to industrial innovators from around the world, including South Africa. For more information, visit www.eirich-award.eu.
The Gustav Eirich Award is named after the father of modern industrial processing. His company, Maschinenfabrik Gustav Eirich GmbH – more commonly known as Eirich, is represented in South Africa by Birkenmayer.
