SAIF Newsletter – June 2016

Message From The Office

The last few months have been a busy period for us, having co-hosted the Effsafound2 Project feedback sessions in Gauteng, Cape Town and KZN and the VDMA Breakfast Meeting during March, which was well attended. This was followed by the International Aluminium Conference and Exhibition successfully hosted by AFSA in Cape Town. In May, the CEO and Vice-President attended the BRICS Foundry Association Forum in China as part of the 30th Anniversary celebrations of the China Foundry Association and Metal China 2016 Conference and Exhibition.

The Gauteng Economic Development Department (GDED) held a workshop on the Iron and Steel Industry for the province and the SEIFSA Indaba was also attended. The common thread is that the manufacturing industry is under pressure in South Africa and that it is continuing to contract. In the foundry sub-sector the few foundries supplying, in the main export markets directly or indirectly, are doing better than the others and those servicing the mining and agricultural sectors are particularly badly affected. The localisation programmes are stalling and order inflow from these projects is very slow.

There is however light on the horizon as exports grow both into Africa and abroad and in particular the passenger vehicle exports are up nearly forty percent on last year.

Planning for the 2nd Metal Casting Conference to be held Gauteng next March is moving ahead rapidly now, with the call for papers having been concluded with a very positive response. We are looking forward to co-hosting this exciting event at which many international visitors are expected.
