Foundry Technology Short Courses – Quarter 3 2024
Dear Members of Industry,
The South African Institute of Foundrymen (SAIF) is offering three highly commended training courses for
Quarter 3 (September to November 2024) as part of the SAIF Foundry Technology Program in Casting
Design & Methods, Practical Sand Testing for Green Sand, as well as Supervisory Management. These
courses are designed for the foundry industry in Gauteng and the surrounding area.
Course Details Quarter 3 2024 (14 September – 23 November)
Closing Registration Date: 06 September 2024
Times: Saturdays 08:30am – 12:30pm
Venue: University of Johannesburg, Metal Casting Technology Station, John Orr Building, Corner Siemert & Beit
Streets, Doornfontein
Cost per student: R3300.00 excl. VAT (Non-Members) / R3000.00 excl. VAT (Members in Good Standing)
We recognize the growing demand for accessible education and are diligently developing an online platform to
extend these valuable learning opportunities to those outside the Gauteng region. Currently, our focus is on

Course Details:
Casting Design & Methods:
Casting Process, Permanent Mould Casting (Gravity Die), Low Pressure Die Casting, Casting Defects,
Filtration, Pressure Die Casting, High Pressure Die Casting, Guide to the Selection of Aluminium,
Casting Alloys, Alloys for Pressure, Permanent Mould Coatings, Casting Economics.
Practical Sand Testing for Green Sand: (Full curriculum to be advised soon)
Introduction to Sand Testing, Green Sand Raw Material Tests: Refractory Sand, Bentonite, Coaldust.
Special Topics: Sieve Analysis Tests, Methylene Blue Tests, Mulling Efficiency Determination, Green
Sand Control. Portfolio of Evidence, Practical Assessment Tests.
Supervisory Management:
The Supervisory Role, Group Dynamics, Control and Leadership, Stress Management and
Communications, Industrial Relations, Productivity and Work Measurement, Quality and Safety
Management.
These courses are aimed at Team Leaders, 1st Line Supervisors, Operations Managers, Operators, and
Maintenance Personnel in Foundries.
Key details include:
Lectures: Saturday mornings for approximately 4 – 5 hours.
Training Commencement: Saturday, 14 September 2024.
Duration: 10 weeks (including revision & exams).
Course Conclusion: Saturday, 23 November 2024.
No training on Saturday, 21 September due to the university holiday on Monday, 23 September.
Students must attend at least 70% of all lectures (5 out of 8) to qualify for the final assessment exam.
The minimum passing mark for the exam is 50%.

SAIF Members in Good Standing
Cost Per Student: R 3,000.00 (Exclusive of VAT: R 3,450.00)
Payment Terms: 50% on registration, balance due by week 8 of training
Non-Members:
Cost Per Student: R 3,300.00 (Exclusive of VAT: R 3,795.00)
Payment Terms: Full payment required on registration

according to payment terms.

• Students may only register for one module at a time.
• Registrations close no later than Friday, 06 September 2024.
• Seats are limited, and no late registrations will be processed.
• No student in their personal capacity or sponsored by their employer will be permitted to register for training if there are any outstanding fees owed to the institute for training and/or any other services.
• All accounts must be paid in full and up to date. No exceptions in this regard!
• On registration, students must present a copy of their South African ID document and supporting documentation of their most recent or highest level of qualification obtained (e.g., Class 10 or Standard 9, Matriculation Certificate, or N2 Certificate).
• Company registrations require authorized signatures from the immediate Line Manager or Human Resources Department.
