SAIF Annual Awards Dinner This prestigious event took place on 25th May 2012 at Emperors Palace and was attended by over 300 members of the foundry industry. New Council Members elected

The AGM was held on 15th May 2012 at the Reading Country Club in Alberton where the election of the new council members for 2012 / 2013 took place.

New Website positively received

One month after the re-launch of the SAIF website, the statistical analysis showed a remarkable 69.20% new visitors to the site and 30.80% returning visitors.

The site is regularly updated with information, training programmes and technical presentations.


Feedback from BRICS – China Beijing
John Davies (CEO) represented the South African foundry industry at the recent BRICS Foundry Forum and exhibition from 9th – 11th May 2012 in Beijing. Other members of industry were Adrie El Mohamadi from NFTN, Farouk Varachia (University of Johannesburg) and Dr Xi Pan (University of Johannesburg). One of the positive outcomes of the visit to China was the successful negotiations for South Africa to host the 2013 BRICS Forum which will be hosted in conjunction with the Metal Casting Conference 2013, which takes place at Kwa Maritane Bush Lodge, Pilansberg in North West Province from 13th to 16th March 2013.

UNIDO SAIF Contract Profiling and BenchmarkingThe SAIF will shortly commence with the profiling and benchmarking of foundries sector, that wish to participate in the State Owned Enterprises infrastructural capital investment programme. More than One Trillion Rands will be expended across a wide range of projects in the next three years.

Metal Casting Conference


Does your Foundry Comply with environmental legislation? This was the title of the technical presentation hosted on 17th April 2012 at the Reading Country Club. Sharon Meyer Douglas from Envirokey Management Services addressed members of industry on the fundamental requirements for the industry to comply with the recent legislation for the disposal of waste.

  • Core and Cores Making at VUT, presented by Nigel Pardoe nearing completion
  • Quality Control to be presented in the Western Cape by Tony O Brien to start in June 2012
  • Production Planning and Productivity course to be presented for the second time in Western Cape, by Denzil Vermeulen

In House on Demand

Career Path Framework learners
After completion of NQF Level 2, learners at Atlantis Foundry as well as Arcelor Mittal are proceeding with NQF Level 3. Learners from SCAW Metals transferred back to AMSA to complete the NQF Level 2 at the beginning of May 2012. Eleven learners received their MerSETA certificates at the SAIF annual awards dinner on 25th May 2012. Congratulations!

Business Today Management Workshop
The second phase of the Business Today management workshop was successfully completed on 4th and 5th May 2012 at Reading Country Club in Alberton. The workshop was attended by 16 delegates from two different foundries and was targeted at the shop floor level employees, supervisors and team leaders.

World Non Destructive Testing Conference
The event took place in Durban from 16th to 18th April and Takalani Madzivhandila attended on behalf of SAIF and UJ.

World Foundry Congress
Took place in Monterrey, Mexico from 25th to 27th April 2012. The South African industry representative to the exhibition was Lucky Juganan from UJ.The paper was adjudged to be one of the three best papers presented, and Lucky received an award, to be shared with the co-author, Dr Tony Paterson

Apprenticeships
The curricula for the three foundry courses in MELTING, MOULDING and ENGINEERING PATTERNMAKER, have been completed and submitted for approval. The list of trades will appear in the Government Gazette at the end of June 2012.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
The project is under way and we will run the first pilot at PRIMA, shortly.

Valve Casting Foundries and Valve Manufacturers Cluster of SA
The partnership with VAMCOSA continues and the designation of VALVES and ACTUATORS is being processed and will be tabled for consideration by the Treasury Department in October 2012.

Foundry Training Centres
The agreements for the development of a foundry training centre at the Ekurhuleni East College have been concluded and tenders for plant and equipment will be issued shortly. A manager for the training centre is also being recruited.

Human Capital Development
The SAIF led team on Human Capital Development (HCD) submitted comments on the Green Paper on Post School Education and training to the Department of Higher Education.
