Skills Development
- Courses planned and already taking place in the second quarter are as follows:
- Sand and Moulding at Autocast in Brits, presented by Didier Nyembwe near completion
- Core and Core Making at VUT, presented by Nigel Pardoe near completion
- Quality Control to be presented in the Western Cape by Tony O Brien to start in June 2012
- Production Planning and Productivity course to be presented for the second time in Western Cape, by Denzil Vermeulen
In House on Demand
- Die Casting and Design at Pfisterer, presented by Carl Reinhardt completed
- Metal Casting Simulation at UJ, presented by Dr Pan commenced on 26th May 2012
- Heat Treatment Course presented by Graham Knight at VUT to start in July 2012
- Practical Sand Testing Course planned for May 2012 will be moved to a later date. Date to be advised.
Career Path Framework learners
After completion of NQF Level 2, learners at Atlantis Foundry as well as Arcelor Mittal are proceeding with NQF Level 3. Learners from SCAW Metals transferred back to AMSA to complete the NQF Level 2 at the beginning of May 2012. All these learners received their MerSETA certificates at the SAIF annual awards dinner on 25th May 2012. Congratulations!
Business Today Management Workshop
The second phase of the Business Today management workshop took place on 4th and 5th May 2012 at Reading Country Club in Alberton. The workshop was attended by 16 delegates from two different foundries and was targeted at the shop floor level employees, supervisors and team leaders.
World Non Destructive Testing Conference
The event took place in Durban from 16th to 18th April and Takalani Madzivhandila attended on behalf of SAIF and UJ.
World Foundry Congress
Took place in Monterrey, Mexico from 25th to 27th April 2012. The South African industry representative to the exhibition was Lucky Juganan from UJ.
Apprenticeships
The curricula for the three foundry courses in MELTING, MOULDING and ENGINEERING PATTERNMAKER, have been completed and submitted for approval. The list of trades will appear in the Government Gazette at the end of June 2012.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
The project is under way and we will run the first pilot at PRIMA, shortly.
Valve Casting Foundries and Valve Manufacturers Cluster of SA
The partnership with VAMCOSA continues and the designation of VALVES and ACTUATORS is being processed and will be tabled for consideration of the Treasury Department in October 2012.
Foundry Training Centres
The agreements for the development of a foundry training centre at the Ekurhuleni East College have been concluded and tenders for plant and equipment will be issued shortly. A manager for the training centre is also being recruited.
Human Capital Development
The SAIF led team on HCD submitted comments on the Green Paper on Post School Education and training to the Department of Higher Education.
